Book #114 of 2023
Look, fully one bazillion people have read and reviewed these books, and I don't have much to add so the same review stands for the whole series. While the novella was a bit more interesting and cast some light onto the characters so far, it read like fanfic of itself which was...something.
In short:
Feyre is painfully reckless, immature and prone to making the wrong choice in clutch moments 95% of the time. Add in that Nesta is one dimensionally unlikable and Elain is criminally annoying while the male characters are tropey to the point of exasperation...why do I NEED to find out what these dummies do next?
The novella felt lighting fast as compared to the other tomes, which I oddly missed the immersive nature of the 600 pagers. The final book was all the slog we have come to expect, but at least this time we have some other people seeing how ridiculous Feyre is.
For all the squealing about how racy these "fairy porn" books are, they were not (comparatively) that spicy. I will apply the disclaimer that in 2010s the genre has not quite matured and all we had for comparison was the Fifty Shades series, but still...I don't get it.
Now all that said, I still read the whole damn series, so Maas is onto something. I don't know why I enjoyed these so much even though they hit every single one of my pet peeves, but that is okay. Much like Brie and Velveeta are both delicious cheeses, this series can stand alongside other books in the genre.
