Rating: ✩✩✩✩✩

I would describe this book as a "firmly OK" resource for anyone living with neurodivergencies.

In terms of speaking to the shared experience of navigating a neurotypical world while struggling with an (often unseen) disability, this was a five-star read. It will especially speak to anyone who is not a cis/white/straight male. For many of us merely going undiagnosed was the best case while it was much more likely that we were punished and ostracized by peers, family, caregivers and healthcare providers. As a guide to unpack some trauma and historical trends while looking to a less-masked future this book is really helpful and insightful.

However, when it comes to actually assisting in unmasking...the book falls short. I didn't really get much guidance from the later chapters and what I did glean may be inaccessible to many. With an American-centered perspective the ideas of "just" getting diagnosed, "just" seeking accommodations, "just" getting a different job, "just" doing school differently and "just" hiring done the tasks with which one struggles is borderline ridiculous. The more social/relationship aspects were slightly more realistic, but even those may require extensive therapy (that few can afford) to really do. I cant say it was bad advice, it just wasn't as practical as i had hoped from a book that promised an exploration of how to live a more unmasked life.

Overall, a mid-pack book that I would still recommend, but only as part of an exploration of the topic.
