Overall I am enjoying this series, however this particular story was not an amazing read for me.
I enjoy a Fated Mates trope, but this felt somewhat lacking in chemistry. Thrane refused to commit fully to claiming his songbound, while simultaneously making Maggie's attendance at the ball a misery...what a keeper! Add in that neither character has a super well developed personality and it was hard to root for the couple even as an interesting plot was unfolding.
The mythos here of the sea dwelling species and the subplot of the former host's occult dabblings at least kept the story going when the characters themselves were bland. The tie ins to monsters and mythology of civilizations past continues and I am enjoying the way that each unique story and author builds a narrative within the same world. The catch here being that (view spoiler) so, cool I guess?
Altogether this was a midpack monster romance, with some interesting premises and low spice.

As the last in the series, it was not an amazing romance if you think that the book is about Emilia and Jack. However, as the last in the series it was very useful because Jack and Emilia were just a foil for solving the long running mystery of M, the lost lover of our ball's fair hostess.
Solidly tropey- readers get to enjoy some Stockholm Romance, mild Enemies to Lovers and twice the Marriage of Convenience. That said, the book isn't really at all like the blurb. (view spoiler)
On the upside, the mystery of the missing M is finally "solved," even if readers have had all the needed information for roughly eight books worth of subplot. The series as a whole was a fun premise and I would like to see more authors dabble in this world even if all the books were not home runs for me.
