Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer
Rating: ✩✩✩✩✩
It has been a while since I have read a YA book and this one was a fantastic selection for the genre. I used it to kick off my “Spooky Reads” season and it fit the bill perfectly. Witches? Check. Murder? Check. Celtic myth? Being super gay? Derring do? Check, check and check. There were some parts where I felt frustrated by how slowly everyone was putting together the clues, but I recognize that as a feature of the genre (teen readers want a chance to solve the mystery) and not a symptom of poor plot structure or character development. I have passed this right onto my teen and tween kids who I am sure will love it.
