NetGalley Review: So This is Christmas by Jenny Holiday

So This is Christmas by Jenny Holiday

Rating:   ✩✩✩✩✩

I have loved the other two books in this series, so I was very excited to read this next story in the world of royal Eldovia.  However, this book just didn't hit the mark for me.

I really liked:

  • The snark was honest and served a purpose (vs the current trend that being immature is the same as banter)

  • The resolution prioritizes the career of the female lead (vs. the trend that all it takes for a career woman to abandon her goals is the right man)

  • I really enjoy just being in the world that Holiday has built with this series.

I really didn't like:

  • The chemistry, or lack thereof.  I get the “opposites attract” and “enemies to lovers” trope, but I just didn't feel it with these two.

  • There was a lot of backstory, both from the respective families and in the business exchanges from Cara’s job, but none of it felt…useful?

  • The resolution felt too easy and contrived (this is probably related to the point above)

In short, this one fell short of my expectation for Holiday and this series.  However, I feel a set up for the next pairing and I will be back to read more.  Given how great Holiday’s other books have been, this is hopefully just a one off that didn't do it for me personally.

Nice review. They can't all be perfect for everyone. Now I have that song stuck in my head!
