My Rating: ✩✩✩✩✩
Now this is a gothic tale! Spooky and atmospheric, this is not a rapid-paced jump scare horror, but a slow dawning of fear and realization. Playing on classics from the genre, so much is packed into a "small" novel. The characters are interesting and well developed, the plot moves without having to rush or belabor exposition and while the "mystery" is easily solvable, as a reader you are not frustrated by the protagonists progression to a conclusion. This in particular being a major pet-peeve of mine with mystery/horror, so to say I liked this would be a huge understatement. I already have the next in the series on hold and can't wait to read the author's entire catalog.
