Based on all the other reviews, this is a minority opinion, but this just did not do it for me. Recommended by Bookshop.org in the category of "Indigenous Horror" I was excited to read some variations on a classic genre that often suffers from "men writing women" and "men writing monsters" syndrome. Disappointingly, this could have been any other random formulaic "horror" book. The main characters were not remotely interesting, there were no women (a man writes horror staple! Yay!), the mystery was obvious and there were zero surprises as the plot played out. There is gore that doesn't really further the story and the background narrative of Native American lore feels like it could be any other monster myth, so it didn't really add anything to the plot. I feel like I have maybe outgrown the monster-horror genre and have for sure outgrown most books written by men.
