Having been so wrapped up in books to review I had completely forgotten about books I requested from my local library. All of these are for sure books where I am late to the party, but better late than never when it comes to seminal texts of Romance Novels.
Dating Dr. Dil by Nisha Sharma ✩✩✩✩✩- This book was just as fun a read as all of the rave reviews promised. A very good (and sexy) retelling of The Taming of the Shrew that despite all of the things about it that I really disliked, was something I genuinely enjoyed. So, the characters are wholly unlikable, the family is a caricature and the dialog (always with the “banter” that is just tragically immature) is genuinely off putting. Yet somehow, you kind of want this to work out. I can honestly say that I loved this book, yet I remember actively disliking like 90% of it? So….great job?
American Queen by Sierra Simone ✩✩✩✩✩- Damn! This one was every bit as hot as the reviews promised. A not gross take on an age-gap/BDSM power dynamic relationship with a bonus icing of polyamory. The book shorthands a lot of back story so the reader can get to the good parts and not get bogged down in all the realities of dating a sitting president/existing in American politics. As a reader, just embrace that and enjoy the filth.
American Prince by Sierra Simone ✩✩✩✩✩- For me, the wheels came off the series a bit here. I hate to malign Ms. Simone’s writing, because it is a great piece of storytelling, but it just feels like A LOT following on from the tenor of the first book. For all the hand-waving away of details in American Queen this one goes deep on backstory, family drama, espionage and cross/doublecross. Is it a pretty well done thriller? It sure is. Was it still pretty sexy? Sure. I just personally didn't enjoy the way those two aspects were interwoven. That said, this series is functionally a trilogy and often book #2 is just lots of exposition. I am still excitedly waiting for my hold on the next book so I can see how all this wraps up.
