I found this murder mystery to be uninspiring. I was drawn to the book because the
synopsis seemed to indicate a twist on the Hinterkaifeck murders and I like a good reference to
true crime in my crime fiction. The actual plot however is a nearly direct retelling
of another famous true crime story, and the discussion of said story solves the mystery
almost immediately. Some attempt is made to add a twist, though this is also an obvious
resolution from the get-go. The writing didn't do much to save the narrative and the characters
are very much “written by a man” as the internet trend goes. I didn't hate reading it,
but had it not been for review, this probably would have been one that went into the library
return bin unfinished.
