July was a slow reading month despite my excitement to sign up for KindleUnlimited. I followed up on some more BookTok suggestions and learned that my standards of "spicy" may be different from many popular recommendations. That's cool, there is a book for every reader and all reading is good reading, but I now know to temper my expectations. None the less, these two popular reads filled some beach time quite pleasantly.
Could have been hot, mostly just hit all the tropes that don't read well for me. Protagonist is "not like other girls," big daddy issues/family drama, lots of convenient plot twists that require complete changes in character, and all this so our fair protagonist can be saved by finding the right men and capitulating entirely to their wishes.
Now when someone recommends a smutty book, this is what I expect. This book was light on plot, high on all the sexiness reverse harem has to offer while having solid world-building. The premise is self-explanatory, the reader is trusted to get what is going and the experience is reminiscent of reading well-created fanfic (which I say as a high compliment, I have read fanfic authors that out write NYT best-sellers on the reg.). I hope more comes in this series and I have added the author's other works to my TBR list.
