This was a great read if you like a mystery, but I wouldn’t call it a “thriller.” The perspective of the murder occurring with in the deaf community added an interesting dimension to the plot and characters while also being very educational. You can tell the author has experience in deaf education so this feels interesting and enlightening, not exploitative for the sake of an edgy plot element. Seeing the story through the interpreter also creates a unique feeling that the story is being “double filtered.” You get what the characters are saying, but also the embellishment of the protagonist.
The characters themselves were okay. This protagonist isn't necessarily likable, but this is also the first in what will be a series. First books have to introduce the cast, the backstory and an entire functioning plot, so maybe Paige will fill out with time. The plot was not strictly predictable, but you do know the killer long before the characters get around to the idea. This isn't a bad thing, readers like to feel like they are solving the mystery, but this feels more like a slightly cozy mystery and not so much an up-all-night thriller. Still an enjoyable read and I would enjoy reading the next in the series since this premise and set of characters has lots of potential.
